Martinique is a prime candidate if you’re looking for a versatile destination . Lush wildlife, wild beaches, rich history, and a warm culture all come together. It’s impossible to get bored! Martinique also offers a wide range of sporting activities, both on land and at sea.

Take the time to explore the beauties hidden in the four corners of Martinique

But beyond its enchanting landscapes, it is the plurality of cultural influences that shape the daily lives of the Martinicans that undoubtedly makes the island so magical. When you visit Martinique , you will notice that although it has been a French overseas department since March 19, 1946, African, Indian and French roots are felt in every corner of the island, nestled in the heart of the Antilles arc in the Caribbean Sea. The architecture, the dishes bursting with flavors and the Martinican Creole are all unforgettable enveloping testimonies.

Visit Martinique through the senses in the Balata Garden

Looking for a colorful getaway from Fort-de-France? Just 10 km north of the island’s capital, horticulturist and landscaper Jean-Philippe Thoze has expertly designed and nurtured a tropical garden that defies belief. Construction began around his grandparents’ typical Creole home in 1982.

Giant bamboos, wild orchids, exotic water lilies: over the years, remarkable species from all over the world have been added to his work. The result is a unique wildlife environment composed of more than 3,000 species of plants that attract birds. Educational panels are strategically placed to satisfy the curiosity of visitors… who can’t help but dream up ideas of grand landscaping redesign!

Flamingos at the Balata Garden

Don’t miss the pond with its lotus flowers and goldfish, as well as the various panoramas that reveal themselves during the walk, with views stretching from the Pitons du Carbet to the sea.

A family visit will also delight the little ones. Plus, from the age of 8, children can join you on a fun trail of suspension bridges 16 meters high between giant mahogany trees. Plan on spending at least 1.5 hours in this enchanting place (but you’ll want more!)

Witness a slice of history at Le Diamant

In addition to being a charming little town where it is good to enjoy the salty air and the surrounding beauty, Le Diamant is a key place preserving important historical traces of Martinique.

A stop at the Cap 110 memorial, located atop the Anse Caffard rock in the commune, is a must-see in Martinique. Fifteen 2.50 m-high busts erected in 1998 decry the slave trade, which is part of the island’s history, and recall the tragic events of a famous shipwreck that occurred there. On April 8, 1830, a boat illegally transporting 300 slaves crashed on the coast. There were very few survivors of the tragic event, as the prisoners were chained in the hold. Built as part of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, the work arouses strong emotions in anyone who comes to pay their respects.
